CAMPFIRE CONVERSATIONS

WITH ANDREW KENNEDY

Andrew Kennedy

Our host is well-travelled, having spent many years on Australia's roads with a van in tow. It's no surprise to find him at the fire, listening to a yarn and here Andrew has captured those tales for you

We’re an interesting mob, particularly as we get older. Cue the “I’ll be right” and “I’m fine to drive all the way (yawn)”. Get some advice? Bugger that, I’ve been driving the Commodore for years without a problem. Towing? A piece of cake!

Well, some cakes crumble a lot easier than others. Too many people have met with disaster when they’re over-confident. Speed, fatigue and weight distribution are all factors. Sorry fellas, but blokes need to share the love a bit more – ‘stuff’ happens, and one day you’ll need your better half to jump into the driver’s seat, as you recover from one thing or another.

They’ll have to tow that three-tonne monster with all the extra, overweight, unbalanced bits and pieces you’ve added, but are they prepared … are you prepared? Common sense should prevail here, for you and your family’s safety, and that of other road users. Enter Ricky Esser, from Follow Me 4WD and Tow-Ed in Adelaide.

I’ve had the privilege of co-hosting some talks with Ricky at South Australian caravan and camping shows. It’s not a hard gig with him, because Ricky has no trouble talking – flick the switch and away he goes. Perfect fella for a campfire conversation, I reckon.

Towing a van, or tackling that rocky terrain with your shiny new 4WD, is all about confidence, repetition, practice and learning some good techniques. So, if I wanted to learn those techniques, or maybe fine-tune my impeccable skills, I’d want someone qualified and experienced to teach me.

Ricky is just that (and as you’ll learn, a lot more). He’s full of enthusiasm and has a passion for safe driving practices. So, I sat him down in a calm environment, flicked on some campfire and bird sound effects (it was cold and wet outside), poured him a coffee, and then had a chat about his past, his training, driver education, and more.
