Millstream Chichester National Park, WA

Stargazers Campground displays the night sky in all its unpolluted glory at the Millstream Chichester National Park, described as an ‘oasis in the desert’. The park encompasses the Fortescue River in WA’s Pilbara region, its landscape interspersed with rolling hills, escarpments, tree-lined rivers and water pools. Within the park, Stargazers Campground can be found on Snappy Gum Drive, north of the Millstream–Yarraloola Road.

The small campground can accommodate caravans, camper-trailers, campervans and tents, and is equipped with toilets and gas barbecues. Surrounded by spinifex and eucalyptus woodland, this campground is close to Deep Reach Pool on the Fortescue River, where you can fish, swim, canoe and kayak. Follow one of the many bushwalking trails or embark on a scenic drive to take in the wild beauty of this national park.

2. Ayers Rock Campground

Ticking Uluru, or Ayers Rock, off your bucket list needn’t be a one-day affair. Make the most of your experience by pitching a tent at Ayers Rock Campground, just a 10-minute drive from Uluru, under the shade of native desert oaks. And because it shares land with Ayers Rock Resort, there are plenty of facilities for a comfortable stay, such as a pool, camp kitchen and self-service laundry, and much more.

To see Uluru in all its glory against a colourful sky, you will want to get to the viewing platforms at either dusk or dawn. You can also complete the 9.4km walk around the base of Uluru or take a guided tour of Kata Tjuta. 3. Deep Creek
Mt William National Park, Tas

Wildlife and wildflowers abound at the Deep Creek campground, so nature lovers in particular should add this camping spot to their list of ‘must-visit’ places. Located north-east of Launceston, this campground is tucked within Mt William National Park, which is one of Tassie’s least visited parks, so you can expect plenty of peace and room to yourself, even in peak season! It also means you’ll need to be self-sufficient and well-equipped, as you’ll have to venture off the beaten track to get here.

Take a bush walk and check out the native flora; at dusk it is highly likely you will spot wombats, forester kangaroos and even wallabies. The beautiful white sand beaches are one of the drawcards here – and you might even be the only one there! Plus, the iconic Bay of Fires is just a one-hour drive south of the campsite, too. Leave large caravans and motorhomes at home, as access to the park is unsealed with low-hanging branches.

4. Booloumba Creek Camping Area 1
Cambroon, Qld

Imagine relaxing amid picturesque rainforest in Queensland’s rugged Conondale Range, framed by eucalypt trees, waterfalls and boulder-strewn swimming spots. If this sounds like your cup of tea, the plainly named ‘camping area 1’ at Booloumba Creek is our pick for you. You will need a high-clearance 4WD to tackle the unsealed roads and creek crossings; unsurprisingly, campervans, caravans and camper-trailers are not allowed (however, they are catered for in ‘camping area 4’).

At camping area 1, you will get secluded tent-based camping close to Booloumba Creek; expect mostly dirt sites with compacted granite tent pads. There are wheelchair-accessible toilets, and water pumped from the creek is available, however, it is unsuitable for drinking without treatment. Fires are allowed only in the fire rings and you will need to bring your own firewood. There’s no mobile phone coverage here, however there is a payphone at the back of the camping hut.

5. Swincers Rocks Campground
Corny Point, SA

Uninterrupted beach views and solitude is what you get at Swincers Rocks in Corny Point, which is essentially the tip of the stunning Yorke Peninsula. There are absolutely no facilities here, so it truly is an escape from civilisation. Fishos will love this area, as there is an abundance of Tommy Ruff and Garfish, and plenty of good spots off the rocks to access deep waters. It’s also great for snorkelling and there’s a few clear and shallow sandy areas that are perfect for dipping your toes in the water.    

Before you set up camp, be sure to get a permit from the council office. Dogs are allowed here as long as they are restrained. If you’re bringing kids along, however, it’s probably best to stay in the safety and comfort of the nearby caravan park and leave Swincers Rock for a day trip. But if you’re self-sufficient, we reckon the view here more than makes up for the lack of toilets!
