CAMPFIRE CONVERSATIONS
WITH ANDREW KENNEDY
Andrew Kennedy
Our host is well-travelled, having spent many years on Australia's roads with a van in tow. It's no surprise to find him at the fire, listening to a yarn and here Andrew has captured those tales for you
Normally our conversations are with folks we meet on the road; everyone has a story. Other conversations are pre-arranged with people we have met or heard about, people with a technical background, or perhaps have worked in or are associated with the RV industry.
But, this one was totally different.
I was sitting at a presentation at the SA Film Corporation, the subject was about podcasting and audio storytelling. Yes, I know, that has a lot to do with caravanning and camping, doesn’t it?
Anyway, a lady sits down next to me and introduces herself as Jacquie Pohl. She asked what had bought me there; I explained and reciprocated with the same question. Soon enough she was telling me about her journey from SA to Queensland, just her and her son.

Then, right on cue, the bloody presentation started! Well, it was a great presentation actually, but I wanted to hear more from Jacquie. Not to worry, they threw on a few drinks and nibbles afterwards (a lot fancier than happy hour at the caravan park), so this gave me a chance to get some more information, and ask Jacquie for an opportunity to have a proper chat.
And that we did. In a great little café on a sunny day, my next campfire conversation was born. I don’t apologise for the background noise, I think it adds authenticity – as did Jacquie’s unique outlook on life. We discuss her amazing family history back in South Africa, her personal journey and her survival skills as she encounters a vehicle rollover, a bushfire and much, much more. It seems this chance meeting was just meant to be.
Listen to Jacquie talk about her fascinating journey
