CAMPFIRE CONVERSATIONS

WITH ANDREW KENNEDY

Our host is well-travelled, having spent many years on Australia's roads with a van in tow. It's no surprise to find him at the fire, listening to a yarn and here Andrew has captured those tales for you

Euroa – still retains the essence of a time past

We’ve been through many country towns in Australia, of course we hope to see many more.

Some say it’s the journey, not the destination, I tend to agree; the people you meet, the stories you hear, make that journey so enjoyable. Places like Peterborough in SA. I remember walking down the main street, smiles on faces as you pass, or the occasional, ‘g’day mate, where ya from?’, make this country so enjoyable, so Australian.

Well we have another town to add to our list. So friendly, so full of quaint cafés and pubs, great food and fantastic service. This town is Euroa in the Shire of Strathbogie, in the north-east of Victoria.

Picture this, we’re sitting by our van in the caravan park, enjoying a coffee, I’m working away on my laptop, this bloke walks past … the conversation starts here.

Enter Des Ryan. Des is one of the friendliest and knowledgeable fellas we’ve met, particularly passionate about Euro and the surrounding areas. He’s full of suggestions and interested in our story as well.

Des volunteers on a Monday at the Hub, that’s the information / tourist centre in the main street of Euroa. I didn’t find out if he was simply passing through on this morning, or if this was a purposeful journey to chat to vanners. The thing is, Des left us wanting more. We wanted to find out more about the floods that ripped through the caravan park in 2017. We wanted to do the drive up Mount Wombat, or check out the North Eastern Hotel, an old pub built in 1889 and seems in ruins today, but has a front bar still in operation with a cold beer to quench your thirst. We wanted to go to the museum, follow the heritage trail or check out the Arboretum.

Des is one of those blokes you want to chat more to … and we did … enjoy our Euroa Campfire Conversation.

When Gavan Moore was involved in a rollover accident on a property in the back of Crookwell, we finalised his claim within two weeks. And we gave him the opportunity to buy back the accessories off his old car to use on his new one. Would your insurance do that?
