CAMPFIRE CONVERSATIONS

WITH ANDREW KENNEDY

Andrew Kennedy

Our host is well-travelled, having spent many years on Australia's roads with a van in tow. It's no surprise to find him at the fire, listening to a yarn and here Andrew has captured those tales for you

We’ve sat around the campfire a few times now, with the well-travelled Dearne and Mark.

Each time we see them, a new story emerges, always a delight to hear, but the comment that got me this time was, "we loved it the first time, so we did it again".

WE LOVED IT THE FIRST TIME, SO WE DID IT AGAIN

Our goal was to get to the four furthest points on the mainland

There were many more comments like:

  • We’d been dreaming about it for years and years, one thing led to another, and we just decided that time was valuable.
  • Australia’s a big place, and until you get out there, you don’t realise how big it is.
  • We decided to throw the rulebook out and go where the compass took us.
  • The scenery is just unbelievable - the blues are blue, the reds are red, the greens are green, and it all just blends so well in the Kimberley.
  • Some people couldn’t see the value in doing all the events or sightseeing, but we could, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
  • What did I learn about myself? I learnt resilience; when you’re out there, you can do it.
  • Fuel. Most expensive was $3.60 litre (Kunawarritji - Canning Stock Route).

Not only are Mark and Dearne well-travelled, but they worked as they went, the longest period was a stay in Broome for a couple of years, where Dearne worked at the hospital. Not bad, when you consider that they had only planned to be away for 12 months.

Mark has a trucking background, has good mechanical knowledge, handy for picking up the odd job here and there, but not afraid of jumping out of the comfort zone to try something else.

These folks love a chat, perfect for a conversation when a lap is concerned. Oh, their final comment? Just do it!
