I grew up in regional Queensland only a few hours out of Brisbane, so naturally we had family and friends who lived in the “big smoke”. A few times a year we would make the journey to the city for family events or to see a doctor who wasn’t available where we lived, and we would always get excited about the opportunity to visit the metropolis.

Over the years with travel becoming easier, distances seemed to have grown shorter and visits to the city now for most are quite common. The excitement of those journeys has diminished as their frequency has increased and I’m pretty sure people don’t lay awake all night with the excitement of the trip.

These days I live in the city; it’s just the way it had to be to make my work easier from a travel point of view. It’s a bit of a phenomenon that it’s easier for a country bloke to show everyone the country if he lives in the city but it’s just how it works. My saving grace from the psychological point of view of not having my soul eroded by the heartless city life is that I spend the vast majority of my time on the road or in the bush for work; it’s like rehab for my spirit.

Enough about me, I’m wandering off track. Here’s what confuses me – city people constantly tell country people that they don’t understand how they live in the country. They tell them of how if they had to be in the country they’d go crazy with boredom because there’s nothing to do there.

Here’s what I want to know: if the city is so great, if the city has everything they need then why, why, why are so many trying to get back into the city on a Sunday afternoon after they all escape it for their days off.

I was recently concluding a trip in Sydney and I reckon the entire population of that apparent metropolitan paradise had escaped the rat race for the weekend and were all heading back in at the exact same time we were humping our caravans down the freeway.

I’m happy to sit in traffic for hours, it troubles me not, all I want is for them to admit that they, like us, love the country more than they love the city.
