AL-KO announces revolutionary new lightweight chassis concept for Aussie caravans

“AL-KO LightR offers significant weight savings in comparison to a traditional caravan chassis”

The chassis is hot-dipped galvanised for durability and corrosion resistance, and for manufacturers, it offers the extra benefit of bolted construction – that means no welding or drilling, so build time is reduced. The chassis has been put through exhaustive on and off-road testing at the Australian Automotive Research Centre in Anglesea.

Once caravan manufacturers come on board with the concept, AL-KO’s engineering team will partner with them to design a custom lightweight chassis to suit their caravan and then test the product to ensure the best performance possible.

Manufacturers will be able to start building new caravans on the AL-KO LightR Chassis later this year.

AL-KO has announced the AL-KO LightR Chassis – an Australian-engineered lightweight chassis concept, which it claims has the potential to revolutionise Australian caravan design.

Developed by AL-KO in Melbourne over the past two years, AL-KO LightR offers significant weight savings in comparison to a traditional caravan chassis, without sacrificing the strength and durability needed for tough Aussie conditions.

“Currently, there is an issue with Australian caravans – they’re becoming too heavy,” said AL-KO Australia & New Zealand Managing Director Peter Mannfolk.

“Not only are caravans getting bigger, they’re also being filled with more extras such as generators, solar panels and toolboxes, pushing legal limits and tow vehicle capacities. It also reduces the caravan’s payload allowance.”

The LightR Chassis is AL-KO’s solution. The innovative design means that weight is reduced to a minimum, and also supports the opportunity to transition to more modern construction methods that save significant weight.
